We're Collecting Stocking Stuffers for Homeless Children

Buy stocking stuffers and drop them off - suggestions include: candy, socks, little toys, art suppplies, soaps, stuffed animals, books, pencils, and other little trinkets. Make sure everything is NEW. Eureka High's EAST has a Christmas collection box here -they'll be picking it up on Dec 11th. EHS's EAST students want to make sure that homeless kids (those living in motels, shelters, and transitional homes) are not forgotten. Our box is 1/4 full, help us fill it to the brim -it's a LARGE box. Thanks for helping!

Rex Bohn Honored

Last night the Boy Scouts of America honored Rex Bohn for all the good work he does in our community, especially for his work with and for the benefit of the kids. He's a great guy and certainly deserved the honor. We were pleased to be there to add our pat on the back along with over 300 others.

Come to Socks for Soldiers Fundraiser

I want to invite all of you to join Jack and I at the Socks for Soldiers fundraiser on Tuesday, Oct 6th starting at 6 at Cherae Heights Casino in Trinidad. The $20 ticket includes dinner and casino tokens. There will be live and silent auctions.

A local woman, Paulette, started this when her son asked her to send him some socks when he was serving overseas 7 years ago. So far this year she has 2000 requests -last year she was only able to send 1700 boxes, even though the requests were for about double that. Will you help us help her raise more dollars so she can fill more requests? You can get more information at www.socksforsoldiers.com.

We're donating a $500 gift certificate that will be auctioned off by that fabulous community supporter Rex Bohn.

Its time for senior portraits. Call 707-443-3364. If the line is busy when you call keep trying -you don't want to miss out on having a Hopkins Portrait for your senior portrait. You might have to settle for an average, run-of-the-mill portrait. And hoppin blue frogs you know how bad that would be.

See Jack Hopkins' Fine Art Prints at Fair

Jack has entered some fabulously beautiful fine art prints in the Redwood Acres Fair (RAF)-opening day is Wednesday, June 24th. Take this opportunity to see them in larger format - and, of course, they look better in-person than they do as a small jpg online. And, there's free admission to the Fair on Wednesday from 8am-3pm -just be sure to buy something to help them out. The RAF is open through Sunday, June 28th. Here's a sample: Lawn Bowling in Auckland, New Zealand

Redwood forest site for family portraits

We also found this beautiful site for a family portrait in the redwoods. It has easy access and you get to stand on the ground -not balanced on a suspended log like in the photo below. Call us at 707-443-3364 to talk with us. You can see more portraits at www.hopkinsportraits.com

Portraits in the redwoods

Yesterday Jack and I spent most of the day down along the Avenue of the Giants searching for an ideal spot to make family portraits in the redwoods. We've had calls from locals and visitors alike for these.

We've found several places that will make fabulous portraits -all the elements you expect from a Hopkins Portrait. This one will require some brave souls as you have to walk out on this log which is suspended more than 6 feet off the ground, but it has easy access. This will be ideal portrait spot for families with tween and teen boys or tomboys. Call us at 707-443-3364. See more portraits at http://www.hopkinsportraits.com

McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce is Hopping!

We've recently joined the McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce and have been impressed with their youth and energy. It's a fun group -you should consider joining. They have monthly mixers -tonight it's at Mickey's. Their annual dinner was held last week with a Tropical Island theme and dress code. We all met new people and had a wonderful evening. Their Board of Directors is DYNAMITE!

Help me Raise Money for MS Research

I just joined the movement to create a world free of MS by registering to raise money for Walk MS: Northern California -Eureka Walk. This is the event I told you about a bit ago -it's being organized by 4 wonderful EHS students -Laura Kramer, Tia Strombeck, Kelly Hillegeistk, and Vivianna Smith.

I am asking you to join me by making a contribution to my Walk MS fundraising.

MS stops people from moving. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society exists to fund research for a cure while also helping people who currently live with MS lead more fulfilling lives.

Please help by making a donation - large or small - any amount you can give will help! Send this to your friends too so they can help make our first Eureka MS Walk a success. Click on the headline of this post to go to my personal page and make a secure, online donation. I appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress.

Warm Regards, Lynda Pozel

Local Students win $5,000 in scholarship money

Ari Ananda (FHS) sponsored by Hopkins Fine Portraiture and Jenna McKenny (EHS) sponsored by North Coast Investors won top scholarship awards of $1100 each at last night's Eureka Chamber Youth Ambassador Final Night. Ari Ananda also was selected by her peers as the Most Inspirational.

The other students participating and winning scholarship awards were Sarah Taylor (MACK) sponsored by Redwood Capital Bank, Kelsey Lee (EHS) sponsored by Jitter Bean, Erin Young (MACK) sponsored by Visiting Angels, Zach Jadro (FHS) sponsored by North Coast Co-op, Jessica Will (FHS) sponsored by SHN Engineers, Valerie Herrera (FHS) sponsored by KZCC-All Hits 95.5, Callie Forrest (FHS) sponsored by Sylvan Learning & Pierson Co, Nochella Ozard (FHS) sponsored by RCI Mortgage, Renee Rivers (FHS) sponsored by US Bank, Matteo Smullin (EHS) sponsored by Shafers, Tao Vang (EHS) sponsored by Coast Central CU, and Madison Kausen (FHS) sponsored by St Joseph Hospital.

John Dalby of Redwood Capital Bank was the evening's MC. He was assisted by Carol Clymo, Youth Ambassador Program Director and John Ford and Lynda Pozel, both Eureka Chamber Ambassadors.

The big stress for the students was "the final question" -each student drew a question from the hat, had 1 minute to prepare and 5 minutes to respond. Judges were scoring each student. The points awarded were added to those accumulated during the 6 week program. While the points were being totaled the students presented skits, song, dance, and other foolishness. The culmination was the awarding of the scholarships and a Hopkins Fine Portraiture gift portrait that Jack and I had taken at the program's Kick-off.

Look for the Youth Ambassadors on a float during the Rhododendron Parade on Saturday, April 25th.

Ari Ananda is Hopkins Fine Portraiture's Youth Ambassador for 2009

We are a sponsor of the Eureka Chamber of Commerce Youth Ambassador Program for local high school students in their junior year. Our student is Ari Ananda. Ari is interested in photography so we're going to have a lot of fun teaching her about some of what we do with our photography. We met Ari a week ago at the Kick-off and we learned a bit about each other. As her sponsor, one of the first things we'll do is invite he to come in and get an overview of a portrait photography micro-business.
